Question

Why do I find skin picking satisfying?

Skin picking triggers a small dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens — the same reward circuit involved in other body-focused repetitive behaviors. fMRI studies of dermatillomania (excoriation disorder) show reduced activity in the dorsal striatum and anterior cingulate cortex, the brain regions that normally inhibit unwanted behavior. The cycle reinforces itself: stress or boredom triggers the urge, picking provides momentary relief, the brain logs the reward, the loop strengthens. Habit reversal training and a hydrocolloid patch like Hero Mighty Patch over the pimple are the two highest-evidence interventions — the patch creates a physical barrier and removes the visual cue. For chronic picking, a dermatologist or therapist with CBT training is the next step.
